This weekend is the first of the two big race weekend's at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) with the ARCA Menard's Series race Friday, the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday and the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series race on Sunday. A lot of folks will be coming through the Toledo area on their way up to MIS up in Brooklyn, MI in the Irish Hills, but probably not as many as in year's past. At its peak, there were grandstands surrounding more than half of the speedway. Over the last 20 years, many of those grandstands have been removed (and even Toledo Speedway inherited a couple of those). NASCAR continues to try to regain its popularity with new rule packages and other gimmicky things. I don't know what the answer is myself, but one thing I can say is that the cars from 1970 definitely looks a lot cooler than the current stock cars.
Some more classic footage from the year before (1969)...the year MIS opened.
You can catch Sunday's race broadcast on our sister station 103.7 'CKY. You can listen along at the speedway with our iHeartRadio app.
