Monday morning Covid 19 update. DeWine speaks with POTUS about masks

Gov. Mike DeWine has angrily pushed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to fully allow a new process for sterilizing masks used by health care workers and finally went right to the President, Donald Trump for some action. Following a phone call between the two men the president publicly twisted the arm of the regulatory agency that Mr. DeWine accused of not moving fast enough. Battelle, based in Columbus, claims it has developed a process that can sterilize 80,000 mask per day and the Governor wanted the FDA to fast track it for approval. DeWine announced the FDA had promised to ease restrictions announced earlier in the day, although no formal announcement had been made later Sunday.

The governor also released the state’s most recent coronavirus statistics Sunday afternoon: 1,653 confirmed cases in 66 counties, including 403 hospital admissions and 139 intensive care admissions. There were 29 deaths in 14 counties.

At President Trump's evening presser he called for extending the voluntary national shutdown for a month, until April 30th now instead of the original 15 days. The U.S. had more than 137,000 COVID-19 cases reported by late Sunday afternoon, with more than 2,400 deaths.
