Lawmaker Introduces Bill for Official State Dog

(Columbus, OH)  Ohio may soon get an official state dog.

There's a bill pending at the Ohio Statehouse to name the labrador retriever as the official state canine.

Why not? Ohio already has a state beverage--tomato juice, a state frog--bullfrog, a state amphibian-- the spotted salamander, two state fruits-- the papaw and tomato, two state songs-- “Hang On Sloopy” and “Beautiful Ohio”, and a state fossil-- the trilobite.

The bill's sponsor says labs are one of the most popular dog breeds in the U.S. and remind him of Ohioans: hardworking, loyal, loving, protective.

There's been no word yet from the state's cat lobby to counter with an official state feline.
