So apparently Belle Isle had a zoo, and it seems to have had quite a history until former disgraced Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick closed it down in 2002. It looks like they just packed up the animals and left this place for nature to take back. And that is has. Although things are overgrown, many of the structures remain including a raised boardwalk.
