The metal world lost an icon this weekend. GWAR frontman Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie passed away yesterday at the age of 50.
I remember the first time I was introduced to GWAR. My friend Dan showed up at the local carryout we used to loiter at covered in blood. He had been front row at a GWAR show. My 13 year old mind was blown.
Fast forward to my early 20's. I was working as a concert promotion assistant. GWAR was booked to play the Main Event. I couldn't believe I was going to be working with these metal legends. Now it can either go one of two ways with band. They can either be pricks, or they can be awesome guys. It should come as no surprise that GWAR was awesome. Especially front man Dave Brockie. Now I didn't expect them to show up in full GWAR garb, but I certainly wasn't expecting the normal looking dude who was in front of me wearing his khaki shorts and tennies asking me about the sound system. He was smart, courteous, and most of all grateful for every fan who came out to see them.
At the end of the night the band room and fans were covered blood. The security guards once white socks were now pink with evidence of the night's show. (I warned them!) Proof GWAR had came and conquered another town. They put their alter egos away and head off to the next city. I will always remember how kind Dave Brockie was to me.
It has been said that Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie was called home to his home planet. We will certainly miss him on ours. RIP Oderus Urungus
