Pope Francis has named a new bishop for Toledo Tuesday, appointing the Most Reverend Daniel E. Thomas as the eighth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo. Bishop Thomas has been serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia since his Episcopal Ordination in July 2006. He fills the office left vacant by the Most Reverend Leonard P. Blair, who was installed as the Archbishop of Hartford, Connecticut in December 2013. Since then, the Toledo Diocese has been under the direction of the Reverend Charles Ritter, serving as Diocesan Administrator.

Bishop Thomas will be installed as Bishop of Toledo at a Mass to be celebrated on October 22, 2014 at 2pm at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral.

At a press conference Tuesday morning, Bishop Thomas said he is honored and humbled to receive the appointment.

"I express my profound gratitude to Pope Francis for his confidence and trust in appointing me the shepherd of the Lord's flock here in northwest Ohio," said Thomas. "I look forward to my first meal at Tony Packo's, to my first Mudhens game, to trying some of the treats at the Spangler Candy Company. I look forward to enjoying Lake Erie, my first time to the Opera, the Symphony and the Museum of Art, to rooting for Ohio State and figuring out how in the world to walk the tightrope between rooting for Toledo, Detroit, Cincinnati or Cleveland teams!"
